Rise in molestation cases in Pakistan – who is to blame?
If you are following national news, you must have noticed a surge in crime, especially one involving minors. The affected mostly belong to impoverished families, in less developed suburbs. The innocent and feeble are preyed upon by the strong, after all, this is the rule of thumb in Pakistan, isn’t it so?
In this article, I am expounding upon the vilest form of crime, one which desecrates the values of humanity. Yes, I am talking about the cases involving coercion of minors into sexual decadence. In case you missed out, the year 2018 proved to be one to forget when it came to human abuse issues. However, the paradox is that the deprived themselves are befalling victim to the poor and the destitute – reinforcing the adage that Poverty breeds evil.
Do Not Blame Individuals for Their Crimes – Blame the System
Ask yourselves this, why is the rate of crimes against humanity substantially low in civilized nations? Is it because of stringent law and order protocols? Yes, but we too have a transparent judiciary system yet the sanctity of our people is violated. The reason for our decline is not very hard to grasp, see, while our neighbors are charting flights to Mars, we can not update our academic curriculum to meet current standards. It is truly a sorry state of affairs.
Yes, education holds the key. India, just like Pakistan, is a developing country in Asia that understands that its progress is dependent on education; science and technology in particular. The more they invest in opening the minds of their people, the swiftly they will progress.
If we look at the numbers, Pakistan holds the uncanny distinction of allocating the lowest percentage of its budget to education while the king’s ransom is spent on defense – a defense that is so brittle that it has been breached countless times by our neighbors and terrorists.
According to reports, the rate of forced sex/rape had increased from 9 percent in 2017 to 12 percent in 2018. From January to August, 77 rape cases had been filed, the majority of which were dismissed because of a lack of evidence.
It goes without saying that the psychological trauma associated with sexual abuse is paramount. The victims are haunted by the ghosts of the past. They suffer from low self confidence and difficulty adapting to demanding situations; among other repercussions.
Knowledge is Light – Ignorance is Darkness – Education Will Come to Our Rescue
If you do not believe that the answer to our woes is education then look no further than the incident of APS. Why do you think the terrorists attacked a high-profile school? Was it because of their repulsion towards our armed forces? Yes, but the bottom line is, they are afraid to see our nation transform from sheep to wolves, which can be achieved only by exposing our young minds to education.
In a country like Pakistan, where our elected members of the parliament hold fake degrees, we cannot expect them to make sincere efforts for the betterment of education. The onus is on us, we have to instill in the minds of our young generations that only education can lead them to know more about themselves, their purpose in the world and ultimately their success will pave the way for the collective good of our society. In the words of Nelson Mandela, “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today”.
