Five killed, several injured as dust storm sweeps across Karachi
KARACHI: At least five people have been reported killed and 20 others injured as massive dust storm wreaked havoc in the metropolis Sunday night and the following morning.
Incidents of wall and roof collapses have been reported in Korangi, Landhi, Malir, Lyari, PECHS, Peoples Chowrangi and Surjani Town– while heavy sandstorm also downed trees and blew away roofs in some areas.
A man died as a tree fell on him near Peoples Chowrangi, while two children lost their lives in separate incidents.
Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) head Dr Seemi Jamali said that 36 people had been brought to the hospital with different injuries, one of whom had passed away last night.
Five students were injured and shifted to a nearby hospital as the roof of a school located on Tipu Sultan Road collapsed, rescue sources said.
Another roof collapse incident occurred in a mosque at a fish harbour, injuring the imam there, sources added.
In Sarjani Town No 7, two people were injured as the roof of their house collapsed, rescue sources said.
At least eight fishermen are missing after their boat overturned near Rehri Goth.
Some flights from Jinnah International Airport were cancelled or delayed last night owing to the dust storm.
Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) Director Sardar Sarfaraz said, “Last night’s dust storm was stronger than expected. Winds blew at a speed of 65km/h and reduced the visibility to 500 metres.”
The wind was so strong that it ripped off tin walls and knocked out power cables in some localities, cutting off electricity. Irregular drilling was also observed in Gulshan town areas.
Garden furniture in one of my neighbours house flew like a projectile and crashed into his vehicles windscreen breaking it. Please ensure there are NO free moving objects around you. #Karachi #DustStorm
