Female polio worker gunned down in Chaman, another injured
CHAMAN: A female polio worker was shot to death on Thursday and another was injured.
According to Assistant Commissioner Syed Sami Agha, unidentified suspects opened fire on a polio team at Sultan Zai, a city located near the border with Afghanistan. The suspects fled immediately after firing at the team.
A female polio worker was martyred and another was injured. The two were shifted to District Headquarters Hospital.
A search operation was launched by security forces after the attack. The crime scene was cordoned off after the vaccination campaign was suspended.
More than 10,000 teams were deployed to vaccinate children in Balochistan. Apart from the 8,829 mobile teams, 951 fixed points and 576 transit points had also been set up all over the province.
Polio workers in Balochistan have often been killed as the vaccination campaign is not popular in rural areas of Pakistan.
Poli workers are provided security frequently as attacks on polio teams are not uncommon in Pakistan. Apprehensive parents also discourage vaccination for their children.
A few days ago, panic spread through parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa after reports emerged that 75 schoolchildren in Peshawar’s Badhber area fell ill after being vaccinated for polio.
Following the panic, a police officer deployed for the security of the team, was gunned down while he was on his way home from work.
