PM appoints Shabbar Zaidi new chairman FBR
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan appointed economist Shabbar Zaidi as the new chairman of the Federal Bureau of Revenue (FBR), on Monday.
The announcement was made by the prime minister during his talk with senior journalists. The prime minister said that a new finance minister had been appointed by the government.
“If we bring about a reformation in tax collection, I am sure that we will be able to collect Rs8 trillion in taxes,” he said.
Mr Zaidi is a former caretaker minister of Sindh and is a chartered accountant. He is known for his work in developing fiscal and taxation laws in Pakistan.
He is a trustee of Sindh Institute of Urology & Transplantation (SIUT) and member of Boards of Governors of Liaquat National Hospital, Karachi. In the past, he has also been the President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan and Chairman of the South Asian Federation of Accountants (SAFA).
Syed Shabbar Zaidi has also authored many books, including Panama Leaks – A Blessing in Disguise – Offshore Assets of Pakistani Citizens, A Journey for Clarity and Pakistan: Not a Failed State.
A couple of days ago, Governor State Bank of Pakistan Tariq Bajwa tendered his resignation after the government asked him tom vacate his position.
The previous FBR chairman, Muhammad Jahanzeb Khan, was sacked by the government a few days ago for his refusal to own an Asset Declaration Amnesty scheme.
Tariq Bajwa had been appointed as the governor of the SBP on July 7, 2017, for a three-year period, which was supposed to end in 2020.
