Al Azizia reference: Nawaz moves court for suspension of sentence
Nawaz Sharif was sentenced to seven years in prison after an accountability court found him guilty in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills reference.
Sharif pleaded with the high court to suspend his sentence on medical grounds. Earlier, the high court had turned down the prime minister’s request to suspend the sentence.
The court had said in a short verdict that there was concrete evidence against the former prime minister in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills reference and that he had failed to provide a money trail.
The court ordered that Nawaz be “sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for a term of seven years along with a fine if Rs1.5 billion and US$25 million”.
